“Dark Mode” failing to apply to Email Body in New Outlook

When you enable Dark Mode in New Outlook, the application frame, navigation sidebar, and message lists turn dark grey or black. However, when you open or compose an email, the message body may remain a blinding, stark white. This is not an application failure; it is usually caused by an independent message reading toggle or hardcoded inline HTML formatting embedded by the original sender.

Fast Fix

Click the Sun / Moon icon located at the top of the reading pane (next to the Reply buttons) or in the ribbon while composing. This toggles the message canvas between light and dark modes independently from the application’s overall theme.

Why the Email Body Stays White

Classic Outlook used Microsoft Word’s rendering engine (winword.exe) to display emails, using basic color inversion rules that often broke images or text contrast.

New Outlook uses the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime (Chromium). Because web engines parse raw HTML and CSS, dark mode handling is split into two independent layers:

  1. The Application Shell Theme: Controls the ribbons, folders, lists, and dialog boxes. Controlled under Settings > General > Appearance.
  2. The Message Canvas (Reading Pane): Contains the actual HTML markup sent by the author.

 └── Message Canvas (Reading Pane)
      ├── Standard Plain/HTML Mail ──> Responds to Sun/Moon Toggle
└── Hardcoded Inline CSS ──────> Overrides Dark Mode to protect text contrast

When an email remains white despite enabling Dark Mode, it is caused by one of two factors:

  • The “Turn on the lights” toggle is active: Outlook remembers your canvas preference independently from the main window.
  • Hardcoded Sender CSS: Marketing emails, automated newsletters, and corporate templates often include hardcoded CSS rules (like background-color: #FFFFFF; color: #000000;) or table backgrounds. To prevent rendering illegible dark text on dark backgrounds, Chromium preserves the sender’s explicit white styling.

Progressive Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1: Toggle the In-Message Sun/Moon Icon

The message body features an independent light switch designed for reading emails that contain poor contrast under dark mode:

  1. Open or select the email in the reading pane.
  2. Look at the upper right of the reading pane (near the Reply, Reply all, and Forward buttons).
  3. Look for the Sun icon (which means “Turn off the lights / View with dark background”) or the Moon icon (“Turn on the lights / View with light background”).
  4. Click the icon. The canvas will immediately switch to dark mode.

Tip: Outlook remembers this state. If you click the Sun icon on one email, future emails will also open with a light canvas until you click the Moon icon again.

Step 2: Verify the Global Client Theme Settings

Ensure New Outlook is not defaulting to a partial theme or matching a conflicting Windows system mode:

  1. Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner.
  2. Navigate to General > Appearance.
  3. Under Dark mode, ensure Dark is explicitly selected rather than “Use system settings.”
  4. Under Themes, select a solid dark theme rather than a custom image theme that may enforce light contrast boundaries.
  5. Click Save.

Step 3: Handling Hardcoded Marketing and Corporate Templates

If standard plain-text and internal emails display with a dark background, but third-party marketing newsletters (e.g., newsletters with complex table layouts) remain white:

  • The Cause: The email author set an absolute CSS rule (such as style="background-color: #ffffff !important;").
  • Why Outlook Does Not Force It: Forcing an inversion on hardcoded templates often turns transparent PNG logos into black boxes or makes dark grey text invisible. New Outlook respects author-defined styles to maintain document readability.
  • Resolution: This cannot be overridden without breaking the layout of the email. Use the client as intended for these specific marketing items.

Step 4: Check Windows High Contrast Themes

Windows accessibility settings can override New Outlook’s WebView2 styling:

  1. Open Windows Settings (Win + I) > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
  2. If a contrast theme is set, Windows will force high-contrast color palettes across all Chromium web views, disabling Outlook’s internal theme engine.
  3. Set Contrast themes to None to restore native Outlook Dark Mode handling.

Diagnostic Escalation

If the entire New Outlook interface flickers, shows distorted color blocks, or crashes when toggling themes, your Edge WebView2 runtime may have corrupt hardware acceleration pipes:
