How to Fix “Formula Auto-Complete” Not Showing New Functions

If you type an equals sign and begin entering a modern function—such as REGEXTEST, GROUPBY, PIVOTBY, or TEXTSPLIT—and Excel fails to display the Formula Auto-Complete drop-down list, either the Auto-Complete interface has been disabled or your Excel installation has not yet received the build containing those functions. When working properly, Formula Auto-Complete suggests valid functions, arguments, and named ranges as soon as you type the first letter.

Fast Fix

Go to File > Options > Formulas and check the box for Formula AutoComplete under Working with formulas. If it is already checked, navigate to File > Account, check your Update Channel, and click Update Now. Perpetual versions like Office 2021 or 2024 LTSC do not receive continuous modern function rollouts.

Root Cause 1: Auto-Complete Feature Disabled in Options

The most direct reason Auto-Complete vanishes is that the user preference was toggled off manually, through an enterprise group policy update, or during an Excel safe-mode recovery.

  1. Open Excel and click File > Options.
  2. Select Formulas in the left-hand navigation pane.
  3. Under the Working with formulas section, verify that Formula AutoComplete is checked.
  4. Click OK, return to the worksheet, type =R, and verify whether the drop-down list appears.

Note: You can also toggle Auto-Complete on the fly while typing in the formula bar by pressing Alt + Down Arrow.

Root Cause 2: Channel Lag and Version Mismatch

If Auto-Complete works normally for legacy functions (like SUM or VLOOKUP) but fails to recognize new functions, your installation does not yet possess the definitions for those functions.

New functions are released on a staged rollout schedule:

  • Microsoft 365 Subscribers (Current Channel): Receive new calculation functions first.
  • Monthly Enterprise Channel: Receives updates once validated for commercial release.
  • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel: Operates on a delayed schedule, meaning new functions may not appear for up to six months after release.
  • Perpetual Licenses (Office 2019, 2021, 2024 Home/Business/LTSC): These editions receive security patches, but they do not receive continuous feature additions. Modern functions rolled out via the Microsoft 365 cloud subscription are permanently absent from older perpetual builds.

To inspect your build:

  1. Click File > Account.
  2. Under Product Information, check the build number and update channel.
  3. If you are on an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, click Update Options > Update Now.

If you attempt to commit an unlisted function and Excel outputs #NAME?, review #NAME? Error when using new Excel 2025 Functions. If the product reports an inactive license state after an update, see How to Fix “Product Deactivated” after Microsoft 365 Monthly Update.

Root Cause 3: Cell Formatted as Text Prior to Entry

If a cell was formatted as Text (@) before you began typing, Excel treats everything you enter as a literal string.

  • The parser never initializes the formula calculation engine.
  • Auto-Complete will not trigger because Excel does not register that a formula is being composed.
  • The equals sign (=) remains visible as plain text.

Resolution:

  1. Select the cell.
  2. On the Home tab, look at the Number Format dropdown.
  3. If it says Text, change it to General.
  4. Double-click the cell or click into the formula bar and press Enter. Auto-Complete suggestions will re-engage.

Root Cause 4: Conflicting Add-Ins Intercepting Keystrokes

Certain third-party COM add-ins, financial modeling toolbars, or automation macros hook into Excel’s keyboard messaging loop. When this occurs, keystroke events are consumed before the native formula bar can trigger its popup window.

Diagnostic Check:

  1. Close Excel.
  2. Press Win + R, type excel /safe, and hit Enter.
  3. Type an equals sign followed by a function prefix (e.g., =UN).
  4. If Auto-Complete works inside Safe Mode, a COM add-in is the cause:
    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
    • Set the dropdown to COM Add-ins and click Go….
    • Disable third-party add-ins one by one until Auto-Complete functionality returns.
